Disappointment ran rampant through the clubhouse and executive suites with the grim news that right-hander Shaun Marcum will have to undergo “Tommy John” ligament transfer surgery and will be lost for the entire 2009 season.

Right-hander A.J. Burnett is expected to opt out of his contract following the season, which with the Marcum update, leaves the Jays’ rotation with two significant holes.

When the 2009 season opens April 6 against Detroit, right-hander Dustin McGowan, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, will likely also not be ready to perform. A realistic expectation is that he he’ll return by mid May.

So next April 6, the Jays’ rotation would seem to consist of Roy Halladay, Jesse Litsch, David Purcey and question marks.
