The Orioles have been criticized for their lack of spending, creativity and direction. But it’s tough to blame them for being located in an American city.
Former first-round draft pick Adam Loewen, released by the Orioles just days earlier, signed a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays of his native Canada.
“The way it was explained to me, it’s all about playing for his national team in Canada and it’s not about terms or anything,” Orioles president Andy MacPhail told The Sun. “The way it was explained to me is he grew up there and it’s his lifelong dream to play for Toronto. I have no interest in having Baltimore become part of Canada. We’re proud members of the United States, and there isn’t much we can do about it.”
