Paul Byrd won’t dazzle anyone with radar gun readings or the “stuff” that he brings to the mound every five days.

The 37-year-old veteran mixes his pitches and throws strikes, and gives his team the same kind of outings pretty much every time he toes the rubber. Friday night’s Sox win was one of those particular kinds of outings, and it was yet another start that pushed Byrd closer to a postseason roster spot. A guaranteed Wild Card entry for Boston could become a reality as quickly as Saturday if the Sox win and both the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees lose.

But enough about magic numbers and playoff berths, and more about the Byrd man. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder finished six innings of work in Friday’s win and allowed three runs on six hits, and wasn’t flashy in…
